Future for probability

Guessing About the Present

In English, we often use "must" to deduce a present fact: "He must be in traffic." In Romanian, you express this exact kind of present-tense deduction using the standard future tense (Viitorul I).

Who is at the door? It must be the courier.
Cine este la ușă? Va fi curierul.
Radu is late; he must be in that traffic jam.
Radu întârzie; va fi în acel ambuteiaj.

Even though the verb is conjugated in the future tense, the context tells the listener you are making a guess about right now, not a prediction about tomorrow.

This probability structure works with any verb, not just a fi (to be):

Your friend is running late; he must be sleeping at home.
Prietenul tău întârzie; va dormi acasă.
Maria is always punctual; she must be waiting for a taxi now.
Maria este mereu punctuală; va aștepta un taxi acum.

Emphasizing Your Supposition

To make it absolutely clear you are speculating, pair this structure with adverbs like aparent (apparently) or pesemne (presumably). The verb remains in the future tense, while the adverb reinforces the uncertainty.

Apparently, the client must be lingering in the parking lot.
Aparent, clientul va zăbovi în parcare.
Presumably they all must be sitting in the same traffic jam.
Pesemne că toți vor sta în același ambuteiaj.
