Formal impersonal clauses (este... că)

Formal Impersonal Clauses

When reading the news or academic texts, you will often encounter objective, impersonal statements like "it is known that" or "it is proven that." In Romanian, you construct these using the verb este (it is) followed by a past participle and the conjunction că (that).

Because the statement is impersonal and does not refer to a specific noun, the past participle is always in its default masculine/neuter singular form.

It is proven that pollution affects the climate.
Este dovedit că poluarea afectează clima.
It is confirmed that the director canceled the meeting.
Este confirmat că directorul a anulat ședința.

Adding Weight with "Faptul că"

In formal writing, Romanian often expands că to faptul că (the fact that). Both structures are translated the same way in English, but using faptul că adds a bit more weight and formality to the statement.

It is a known fact that stress affects health.
Este știut faptul că stresul afectează sănătatea.
It is proven that the global phenomenon is hard to understand.
Este dovedit faptul că fenomenul global este greu de înțeles.

Academic and Scientific Statements

This grammatical structure is the backbone of scientific reporting and data analysis. It pairs perfectly with analytical verbs and academic vocabulary. Common participles used in this way include demonstrat (demonstrated), stabilit (established), estimat (estimated), and acceptat (accepted).
