Demonstrative adjectives point out specific objects ("this" or "that") and must agree with the gender of the noun they describe.
When placed before the noun, demonstrative adjectives are used with the noun's basic form, without a definite article attached. For example, copacul (the tree) drops its ending to become acest copac (this tree).
Pointing to Things Nearby (This)
To talk about something close, use acest for masculine and neuter nouns, and această for feminine nouns.
| This tree is very old. | Acest copac este foarte vechi. |
| This building is a museum. | Această clădire este un muzeu. |
| The professor writes this document. | Profesorul scrie acest document. |
Pointing to Things Far Away (That)
To point out objects further away, use acel for masculine and neuter nouns, and acea for feminine nouns.
| That tree is big. | Acel copac este mare. |
| That food is very good. | Acea mâncare este foarte bună. |
| That document is on the table. | Acel document este pe masă. |
