Skincare Basics
Before applying makeup, it is important to prep and moisturize (a hidrata) your complexion (tenul).
When expressing possession or "of the" (the Genitive case), feminine nouns change their endings. For example, feminine words ending in -iunea change to -iunii (like loțiunea → loțiunii).
| I like to use the lotion in the morning. | Îmi place să folosesc loțiunea dimineața. |
| The price of the lotion is very high. | Prețul loțiunii este foarte mare. |
| This lotion moisturizes the complexion very well. | Această loțiune hidratează tenul foarte bine. |
When talking about personal grooming—like washing or moisturizing your own face—Romanian uses reflexive pronouns. Use îmi to mean "to myself" (translating naturally as "my") and își for "to herself/himself" (translating as "his/her").
| I prefer to moisturize my face in the evening. | Prefer să îmi hidratez fața seara. |
At the end of the day, you will need a makeup remover (demachiantul) to wipe off your makeup (machiajul).
| I know how to clean the complexion with the makeup remover. | Știu să curăț tenul cu demachiantul. |
| She wipes off her makeup every evening. | Ea își șterge machiajul în fiecare seară. |
Makeup and Color
Your makeup bag likely includes lipstick (rujul), mascara (rimelul), and powder (pudra). These everyday nouns pair perfectly with the colors you already know.
Remember the "of the" rule for feminine nouns? Words ending in -a change to -ei (like pudra → pudrei and oja → ojei).
| The red lipstick is my favorite. | Rujul roșu este preferatul meu. |
| This black mascara is very good. | Acest rimel negru este foarte bun. |
| The quality of the powder is excellent. | Calitatea pudrei este excelentă. |
Nails
Complete your routine by maintaining your nails (unghia) and applying nail polish (oja).
| I changed the color of the nail polish. | Am schimbat culoarea ojei. |
| I apply the lipstick, and you apply the nail polish. | Eu aplic rujul, iar tu aplici oja. |
| She cuts her nails in the bathroom. | Ea își taie unghiile în baie. |
