To say that something has less of a quality, use mai puțin (less). When comparing two things directly, link them with decât (than).
mai puțin + adjective + decât
| This product is less efficient than the old model. | Acest produs este mai puțin eficient decât modelul vechi. |
| This laptop is less fast than the computer. | Acest laptop este mai puțin rapid decât calculatorul. |
Adjective Agreement
The adjective agrees in gender and number with the noun it describes. Notice how the adjectives change to their feminine forms below:
| The grey bag is less practical than the backpack. | Geanta gri este mai puțin practică decât rucsacul. |
| I am writing a review because the washing machine is less durable. | Scriu o recenzie pentru că mașina de spălat este mai puțin rezistentă. |
Implied Comparisons
If the comparison is clear from context, you can drop decât and just use mai puțin + adjective:
| The review says that the product is less durable. | Recenzia spune că produsul este mai puțin rezistent. |
| We need a less noisy model. | Avem nevoie de un model mai puțin zgomotos. |
Comparing Concepts
You can use this same structure to compare abstract concepts, like weighing price against quality:
| The price is less attractive than the quality. | Prețul este mai puțin atractiv decât calitatea. |
| The quality is less important than the price. | Calitatea este mai puțin importantă decât prețul. |
