At the Cobbler

Visiting the Cobbler

When your footwear needs repair, it is time to visit the cobbler (cizmarul) at their workshop (atelierul).

I left the shoes at the cobbler.

Heels and Wear

A common issue is a broken heel (tocul) or shoes that are completely worn out (tocit).

Romanian adjectives agree with the gender and number of the nouns they describe. You will see forms like tocită for a feminine singular noun (like talpa, the sole) or tociți for a masculine plural noun (like pantofi, shoes).

The heel of the left shoe is very worn out.
Tocul pantofului stâng este foarte tocit.
You brought a pair of worn out shoes.
Ai adus o pereche de pantofi tociți.

Soles and Glue

If the sole (talpa) starts coming apart from the shoe, it is unglued (dezlipit).

The sole is worn out and must be repaired.
Talpa este tocită și trebuie reparată.
The sole of this shoe is unglued.
Talpa acestui pantof este dezlipită.

Laces and Replacements

Sometimes a repair is as simple as getting a new shoelace (șiretul). When parts cannot be fixed, the cobbler will need to replace (a înlocui) them.

I don't have blue shoelaces for the sneakers.
Nu am șireturi albastre pentru adidași.
The cobbler will replace the worn out heel.
Cizmarul o să înlocuiască tocul tocit.

Leather Care and Adjustments

Regular maintenance keeps your shoes looking fresh. You can ask the cobbler to polish (a lustrui) the leather or stretch (a lărgi) the shoes if they are too tight.

Usually, he polishes leather shoes.
De obicei, lustruiește pantofii din piele.
