Wild animals
Șarpele (the snake) and iepurele (the rabbit) end in -e, like câinele, so their article is -le. Watch the plural of șarpe: the vowel changes.
| a … | the … | plural |
|---|---|---|
| un șarpe | șarpele | șerpi |
| un iepure | iepurele | iepuri |
| o găină | găina | găini |
| I saw a snake in the forest. | Am văzut un șarpe în pădure. |
| Snakes are wild animals. | Șerpii sunt animale sălbatice. |
| The rabbit eats carrots. | Iepurele mănâncă morcovi. |
On the farm
Grandparents in the countryside keep găini — hens — beside the cow and the pig you already know.
| The hen lays eggs. | Găina face ouă. |
| Grandma has hens and a cow. | Bunica are găini și o vacă. |
At the zoo
Grădina zoologică is literally the zoological garden. After la the article normally drops, but here an adjective follows the noun, so it stays: la grădina zoologică.
| On Sunday we are going to the zoo. | Duminică mergem la grădina zoologică. |
| Don't feed the animals at the zoo! | Nu hrăniți animalele la grădina zoologică! |
And one warning you will be glad to know:
| Don't touch the snake! | Nu atinge șarpele! |
