Adjectives as Adverbs
In English, we often add "-ly" to an adjective to create an adverb ("perfectly," "logically").
In Romanian, this is much simpler. To describe how an action is performed, just use the masculine singular form of the adjective. Because it acts as an adverb, the word never changes its ending for gender or number.
| He speaks Romanian perfectly. | El vorbește româna perfect. |
| Our team played badly yesterday. | Echipa noastră a jucat prost ieri. |
| My colleague explains everything to me logically. | Colega mea îmi explică logic totul. |
| The grandfather always speaks to us gently. | Bunicul ne vorbește blând mereu. |
| You answered wrongly to the first question. | Ai răspuns greșit la prima întrebare. |
| The engine is working normally now. | Motorul funcționează normal acum. |
Describing Appearances
A common verb paired with these adverbs is a arăta (to look / to appear). Just as you might say "it looks horrible" in English, Romanian uses the same invariable adverb form to describe appearances.
| to look (appear) | arăta |
| The weather looks horrible today. | Vremea arată oribil astăzi. |
| You look great in this blue jacket! | Arăți grozav în această jachetă albastră! |
