Questions & Answers about Não temos medo da morte.
Why does this sentence use temos (we have) instead of a word for 'we are'?
In Portuguese, you use the verb ter (to have) to express certain feelings or physical states where English uses 'to be'. So, instead of saying 'we are afraid', you literally say 'we have fear' (temos medo). This pattern is also used for feeling hungry (ter fome), thirsty (ter sede), and cold (ter frio).
Why is it da morte and not just de morte?
Da is a combination of the word de (of) and the feminine word for 'the', a. In English, we just say 'death' when talking about it generally, but Portuguese requires the definite article before abstract nouns. So the sentence translates literally as 'We do not have fear of the death'.
Does the da match with medo or morte?
