Usages of bater

A testemunha estava a dormir quando o homem bateu à porta.
The witness was sleeping when the man knocked on the door.
A polícia estava a bater à porta porque eles estavam a fazer muito barulho.
The police were knocking on the door because they were making a lot of noise.
Quando me levanto, bato na madeira para afastar o azar.
When I get up, I knock on wood to ward off bad luck.
Apesar de as ondas baterem no barco, ele não afunda.
Despite the waves hitting the boat, it does not sink.
