Why is it boa and not bom?
In Portuguese, words for things have a gender. The word for night, noite, is feminine. Because of this, the word for "good" must also be feminine, so it becomes boa. This is why it is different from bom dia (good morning), since dia is masculine.
Can I use boa noite when saying hello, or only when saying goodbye?
You can use it for both! English has "good evening" for arriving and "good night" for leaving, but Portuguese just uses boa noite for any greeting or goodbye after dark.
Does até mean "see you"?
The word até actually means "until". So, até amanhã translates word-for-word as "until tomorrow". You will see até used in many Portuguese goodbyes, like até logo (until later).
How do I pronounce the nhã part of amanhã?
The nh makes a sound very similar to the "ny" in the English word "canyon". The little wave symbol over the last a means it is a nasal vowel, so the sound should resonate in your nose.
