Simultaneous Actions with 'Ao'
To say "upon doing something" or "when doing something," Portuguese often uses the word ao followed by the Personal Infinitive (Infinitivo Pessoal).
Unlike English, Portuguese allows you to conjugate an infinitive verb by adding endings to it, clarifying who is performing the action. Add these endings directly to the infinitive:

Notice how the ending of the verb right after ao matches the subject of the sentence.

| When we study the artifacts, we see that archaeology is interesting. | Ao estudarmos os artefactos, vemos que a arqueologia é interessante. |

The ao clause can appear at the beginning or the end of the sentence.
| The archaeologists get full of dust when they finish the excavation. | Os arqueólogos ficam cheios de poeira ao terminarem a escavação. |
| It is possible that there is a lot of dust when we clean the ruin. | É possível que haja muita poeira ao limparmos a ruína. |
