Pronouns after prepositions (para mim, de ti)

Pronouns After Prepositions

When a pronoun follows a preposition (like de, para, em, por, or a), its form sometimes changes. Fortunately, only the "I" and "you (singular)" forms change. The rest stay exactly the same as their subject forms:

Using de and em

Certain verbs require specific prepositions. For example, depender (to depend) is followed by de, and ter orgulho (to be proud) is followed by em.

I depend on you, and you depend on me.
Eu dependo de ti e tu dependes de mim.
Your mother is very proud of you.
A tua mãe tem muito orgulho em ti.

Giving and Benefiting (para and a)

Use para (for) to say who something is intended for, and a (to) to indicate who receives it.

This gift is very special to me.
Esta prenda é muito especial para mim.
This book is useful to him, but not to me.
Este livro é útil para ele, mas não para mim.
I give the gift to you guys.
Eu dou a prenda a vocês.

The Preposition com (With)

With the preposition com (with), mim and ti combine into single words: comigo (with me) and contigo (with you).

A faithful friend stays with you.
Um amigo fiel fica contigo.

Other pronouns stay as separate words.

The manager counts on her.
O gerente conta com ela.

Expressing Affection (por)

Use the preposition por to express feelings like affection (carinho) for someone.

I have a lot of affection for you.
Eu tenho muito carinho por ti.
