Preparing for a martial arts grading is an intense experience that demands both physical and mental discipline. When discussing your readiness, you will often want to avoid repeating the same adjectives over and over.
The Neuter Predicative Clitic (o)
In English, if someone asks, "Are you focused?" you might simply reply, "I am." In Portuguese, you generally cannot leave a linking verb (like ser, estar, or parecer) hanging on its own. Instead, you replace the omitted adjective or noun with the neuter clitic o.
This o translates roughly to "so" or "it." Because it represents a general state or idea rather than a specific masculine noun, it is invariable—it always stays o, regardless of the gender or number of the words it replaces.
In affirmative sentences, it attaches to the end of the verb with a hyphen.
| Is he the examiner for the grading? Yes, he is. | Ele é o examinador para a graduação? Sim, ele é-o. |
| The examiner is strict, or at least he seems it in the dojo. | O examinador é rigoroso, ou pelo menos parece-o no dojo. |
Placement with "Magnet" Words
Just like other object pronouns in European Portuguese, the neuter o is pulled directly before the verb by certain "magnet" words (clitic attractors). These include negative words like não and nunca, as well as conjunctions like que (that).
| He seems agile, but during the combat he is not. | Ele parece ágil, mas durante o combate não o é. |
| Despite being drained, I am focused, and I know that you are too. | Apesar de estar extenuado, estou focado, e sei que tu também o estás. |
| During the combat you seem drained, but I know that you are not. | Durante o combate pareces extenuado, mas sei que não o estás. |
Spelling Changes: -lo
When attaching the clitic to the end of a verb, standard spelling rules apply. If the verb form finishes with an -s, -r, or -z, the verb drops that final consonant, and the pronoun changes to -lo to make pronunciation easier.
For example, if you want to attach o to estamos (we are), you drop the -s and add -lo, resulting in estamo-lo.
