### Three Words for Where

You have been using these words for a while — here is the system behind them. Portuguese place adverbs are anchored to the PEOPLE in the conversation, exactly like *este / esse / aquele*:

That middle row is the one English lacks: **aí** means *there, where you are* — on the phone it means *at your end*.

### cá and lá: the Loose Pair

**{{item:979377}}** and **lá** are vaguer versions of *here* and *there* — areas rather than points. **Cá** is common with coming and going and in *cá em casa* (here at our place); **lá** is the everyday word for a far or already-mentioned place.
