Multipliers (Scaling Up)
When you want to increase the portions (as porções) in a recipe, you must calculate (calcular) new amounts using multipliers like o dobro (double) and o triplo (triple). These function as masculine nouns.
To say "double of the" or "triple of the", use the preposition de combined with the definite article of the ingredient (do, da, dos, das).
| You need to calculate the exact double of the flour. | Tu precisas de calcular o dobro exato da farinha. |
| I was putting triple the sugar on the scale. | Eu estava a pôr o triplo do açúcar na balança. |
| She was adding double the salt. | Ela estava a juntar o dobro do sal. |
Fractions (Scaling Down)
If you need to reduce (reduzir) a recipe, you can use fractions. A common fraction is o terço (the third). Just like multipliers, fractions use de + article to connect to the noun they modify, such as referring to a third of the weight (um terço do peso).
| We have to reduce the milk to a third. | Nós temos de reduzir o leite a um terço. |
| My scale only shows a third of the weight. | A minha balança só mostra um terço do peso. |
Calculations and Proportions
When modifying a recipe, you will often need to multiply (multiplicar) to find the exact proportion (a proporção exata).
| We are multiplying the exact proportion. | Nós estamos a multiplicar a proporção exata. |
| You need to multiply our portion. | Tu precisas de multiplicar a nossa porção. |
