Equality comparisons (tão... como)

Comparisons of equality

To say that two things are equal in some way (e.g., "as fast as"), use the structure tão... como. Place the describing adjective between these two words. The adjective always agrees in gender and number with the subject (the first noun).

The horse is as fast as the dog.
O cavalo é tão rápido como o cão.
The elephants are as big as the trees.
Os elefantes são tão grandes como as árvores.

Negative comparisons

To say that things are not equal, simply place não before the verb.

The horses are not as slow as the cats.
Os cavalos não são tão lentos como os gatos.
This flower is not as beautiful as the forest.
Esta flor não é tão linda como a floresta.

Asking questions

To turn a comparison into a question, keep the exact same word order and just raise the pitch of your voice at the end of the sentence.

Is the mouse as dangerous as the elephant?
O rato é tão perigoso como o elefante?
