Drawing Conclusions: Posto isto and Sendo assim
When stating a fact and drawing a logical conclusion, Portuguese frequently uses non-finite clauses as discourse connectors.
Two common expressions for summarizing a situation before delivering a consequence are posto isto and sendo assim. They typically appear at the beginning of a sentence and are followed by a comma.
Posto isto
Posto isto literally translates to "this placed." In practice, it means "having said that," "given this," or "that being the case."
| The union does not accept this. Having said that, the deadlock continues. | O sindicato não aceita isto. Posto isto, o impasse continua. |
| The company is unyielding about the dismissals. Having said that, we are going to start the stoppage. | A empresa está irredutível sobre os despedimentos. Posto isto, vamos começar a paralisação. |
Sendo assim
Sendo assim translates to "being like this." It functions as "that being so," "therefore," or "in that case."
| The manager refuses the concession. That being so, we need a mediator. | O gerente recusa a cedência. Sendo assim, precisamos de um mediador. |
| They canceled the union meeting. That being so, do not sign the document. | Cancelaram a reunião sindical. Sendo assim, não assinem o documento. |
| We resolved the deadlock today. That being so, the stoppage ended. | Resolvemos o impasse hoje. Sendo assim, a paralisação acabou. |
