Contractions with demonstratives (neste, desse, daquele)

In Portuguese, the prepositions em (in, on, at) and de (of, from, about) merge directly with demonstratives to form single words. Like the base demonstratives (este, esse, aquele), these contractions must agree in gender and number with the noun they describe.

Contractions with "Este" (This)

Merge em or de with este for objects close to you (the speaker).

MasculineFeminine
em + estenestenesta
de + estedestedesta

(For plurals, simply add an -s: *nestes, nestas, destes, destas).*

I live in this building.
Moro neste prédio.
What is in this box?
O que está nesta caixa?
The door of this building is old.
A porta deste prédio é velha.
The window of this room is large.
A janela desta sala é grande.

Contractions with "Esse" (That - near listener)

Merge em or de with esse for objects close to the person you are talking to.

MasculineFeminine
em + essenessenessa
de + essedessedessa

(Plurals: *nesses, nessas, desses, dessas).*

Your shoes are in that box.
Os teus sapatos estão nessa caixa.
What do you have in that pocket?
O que tens nesse bolso?

Notice how de often translates to "about" when used with verbs of communication:

We are talking about that problem today.
Falamos desse problema hoje.
The key to that room is here.
A chave desse quarto está aqui.

Contractions with "Aquele" (That over there - far)

Merge em or de with aquele for objects far away from both of you.

de + aqueledaqueledaquela

(Plurals: *naqueles, naquelas, daqueles, daquelas).*
