Expressing Consequences with "Por Isso"
When you want to explain the result of a situation, use the connector por isso (therefore / so). Literally meaning "for that," it links a cause directly to its consequence or result.
The structure is very simple: state the reason, add a comma, and then use por isso followed by the result.
| The alarm clock didn't ring, so I overslept. | O despertador não tocou, por isso adormeci. |
| The traffic jam was big, so I arrived late. |
You will frequently use this connector to explain daily decisions, such as resting after a long day or changing your schedule.
| The flight was very tiring, so I am resting at the hotel. |
| I had an urgent problem, so I canceled the appointment. |
It is also perfectly suited for making minor excuses, like explaining why you are staying in or skipping a meal.
| My head hurts, so I don't want to do anything today. |
| My belly hurts, so I am not eating the dessert. |
