The connector além de translates to "besides" or "in addition to." You will frequently use it at the beginning of a sentence, followed by an infinitive verb, to introduce an extra action before stating the main one.

When you want to connect two complete, separate sentences or add a new, standalone thought, use além disso ("furthermore" or "besides that"). It typically starts a new sentence and is immediately followed by a comma.
