Questions & Answers about Tutaj kupuje się świeże warzywa i witaminy.
Why does kupuje się mean "one buys" here instead of "it buys itself"?
This sentence uses the impersonal się construction. When you use a third-person singular verb like kupuje (buys) with the word się, it indicates that a general, unspecified group of people is doing the action. It translates best to "one buys", "people buy", or a general "you buy" in English.
What case is świeże warzywa i witaminy, and why doesn't the impersonal się change that?
They are in the accusative case because they are the direct object of the verb kupować (to buy). Even though the impersonal się construction can feel passive in English (like saying "vegetables are bought here"), in Polish the verb remains active. It still requires its normal direct object in the accusative case. Since these are non-masculine-personal plural nouns, their accusative forms look exactly like their nominative (dictionary) forms.
Could I put się earlier in the sentence, like Tutaj się kupuje...?
Yes, absolutely! Word order in Polish is quite flexible. The main rule for się is that it cannot be the very first word of a sentence. Both Tutaj kupuje się and Tutaj się kupuje are perfectly natural and mean the exact same thing.
Why is the ending for świeże the same as it would be for a single neuter noun?
Good eye! The adjective świeże (fresh) here is actually in the plural form. For all non-masculine-personal plural nouns (which includes the neuter warzywa and the feminine witaminy), the accusative plural adjective ending is -e. It just happens to look identical to the neuter singular ending.
