Impersonal subjects (się)

The Impersonal "się"

When talking about general habits or giving broad advice, English uses generic pronouns like "one", "you", or "people". In Polish, express this with the impersonal się construction.

To form an impersonal statement, use the 3rd-person singular form of a verb and add się.

In the morning, one eats a small meal.
Rano je się mały posiłek.
One drinks water, not calories.
Pije się wodę, a nie kalorie.
Here, one buys fresh vegetables and vitamins.
Tutaj kupuje się świeże warzywa i witaminy.

Giving General Advice

This construction is perfect for discussing healthy lifestyle rules or everyday routines, focusing on the action rather than the actor.

To have energy, one eats healthy meals.
Żeby mieć energię, je się zdrowe posiłki.
One does not eat too much sugar.
Nie je się zbyt dużo cukru.
One avoids empty calories.
Unika się pustych kalorii.

Discussing the Body and Fitness

We can easily apply the impersonal się to verbs of motion and exercise to describe what "one does" to maintain fitness (kondycja) and shape (forma).

One runs often to have fitness.
Często się biega, żeby mieć kondycję.
How does one care for shape?
Jak się dba o formę?

Reflexive Verbs in Context

Some verbs inherently require się because they are reflexive, such as odżywiać się (to nourish oneself).

to nourish oneself
odżywiać się

When used with specific subjects, they conjugate normally. The się here is part of the verb, not an impersonal construction.

We nourish ourselves very well.
Odżywiamy się bardzo dobrze.
Does an active person nourish themselves better?
Czy aktywny człowiek odżywia się lepiej?
