Questions & Answers about Czy odzyskali niepodległość w dziewiętnastym czy w dwudziestym wieku?
Why does the word czy appear twice in this sentence?
It serves two completely different functions here. The first czy at the very beginning is the question marker that turns the statement into a yes/no question (translating loosely to "Did...?"). The second czy in the middle of the sentence simply means "or" (w dziewiętnastym czy w dwudziestym = "in the 19th or in the 20th").
Why is the Locative form of wiek (century) wieku and not "wiece"?
Masculine nouns ending in -k, -g, or -ch (like wiek) take the -u ending in the Locative case instead of the typical -e. This avoids awkward sound changes. So, "in the century" is always w wieku.
Why do the numbers end in -ym (dziewiętnastym, dwudziestym)?
When talking about centuries, we use ordinal numbers (nineteenth, twentieth) which act like adjectives in Polish. Because w wieku is in the Locative case, the numbers describing it must also be in the Locative. For masculine adjectives, the Locative ending is -ym.
The word niepodległość (independence) is the direct object here. Why doesn't its ending change for the Accusative case?
Niepodległość is a feminine noun, but it belongs to a special group of feminine nouns that end in a consonant rather than -a (almost all abstract nouns ending in -ość are feminine). For these nouns, the Accusative form looks exactly the same as the Nominative (dictionary) form.
