Questions & Answers about Mój płaszcz jest cały mokry.
Why do we use cały (whole) here instead of a word for completely?
In Polish, it is very natural to use the adjective cały agreeing with the noun to mean completely or all. Because płaszcz is a masculine noun, we use the masculine form cały to say the coat is all wet.
Don't we usually use the instrumental case after the verb jest? Why are the adjectives in the nominative case?
You use the instrumental case after być (to be) when you connect a noun with another noun, like saying someone is a student. However, when you are just describing a noun using adjectives, like cały and mokry here, they stay in the basic nominative case.
How can I tell that płaszcz is a masculine noun?
Most masculine nouns in Polish end in a consonant. Even though -sz is a special hushing sound, it is still a consonant. Because płaszcz is masculine, all the describing words around it (mój, cały, mokry) must be in their masculine forms.
