Learn Polish: Czy wierzysz w Boga? - Do you believe in God?

The verb wierzyć (to believe) always pairs with the preposition w followed by the Accusative case. While w takes the Locative case when talking about a static physical location (like being inside a building), abstract actions or movements often trigger the Accusative case instead.

Why does the word Bóg change to Boga here?

Boga is the Accusative case of Bóg (God). In Polish, masculine animate nouns (which include people, animals, and God) have an Accusative form that is identical to their Genitive form, which typically means adding an -a to the end of the word.

Is wierzysz related to the Polish word for faith?

Yes! The verb wierzyć (which gives us the "you" form wierzysz) shares the exact same root as the noun wiara, which translates to faith or belief.

Could I ask this question without using the word Czy?

Yes, in casual spoken Polish, you can simply say Wierzysz w Boga? and raise your pitch at the end of the sentence to show it is a question. However, starting with Czy is the standard grammatical way to form a yes/no question and makes your meaning instantly clear.
