Questions & Answers about Czy nie lubicie serialu?
Why is the word for TV series serialu here instead of its basic form serial?
This is the Genitive of negation in action! Normally, the verb lubić (to like) requires the Accusative case. So, 'You like the TV series' would be Lubicie serial (because inanimate masculine nouns look exactly like their dictionary form in the Accusative). However, because of the word nie (not), the rule changes. A negated verb forces the object into the Genitive case, changing serial to serialu.
Why does serialu end in -u? I thought masculine Genitive nouns ended in -a.
Masculine inanimate nouns (things, not people or animals) are a bit tricky in the Genitive case because their endings can be either -a or -u. While there are some loose patterns, you often just have to memorize which ending a specific word takes. The noun serial happens to take the -u ending.
Who exactly is the sentence asking? Is lubicie singular or plural?
Lubicie is the plural 'you' form, used when talking to two or more people informally (like 'you all' or 'you guys'). If you wanted to ask just one person this question, you would use the singular form lubisz: Czy nie lubisz serialu?
