Questions & Answers about Widzę mojego psa.
Why is the word for dog psa instead of pies?
In this sentence, the dog is the direct object (the thing being seen), so it needs to be in the accusative case. For masculine living things (animate nouns) like animals or men, we add an -a to the end of the noun.
Wait, why isn't it piesa? Where did the 'e' go?
Pies is one of a few common Polish words that has a disappearing 'e'. When you add an ending to it (like the -a for the accusative case), that e drops out to make it easier to say. So, pies becomes psa.
Why does the word for 'my' change to mojego?
Words that describe a noun (like adjectives or words like 'my') have to match the noun's case and gender. Because psa is a masculine animate noun in the accusative case, the basic word mój (my) must take the matching -ego ending, becoming mojego.
Where is the word for 'I' in this sentence?
In Polish, you usually leave out the word for 'I' (ja) because the verb itself tells you who is doing the action. The -ę ending on widzę already tells us that it means 'I see'.
