Questions & Answers about Jak się pan ma?
Why do we use jak here instead of asking a question with czy?
Jak means "how". You use question words like jak, co (what), or gdzie (where) at the very beginning of a sentence when you need specific information. You only use czy at the start of a sentence when the answer will be a simple yes or no.
The English translation says "How are you", but doesn't ma mean "has"?
Yes! In Polish, you don't ask how someone "is" for their well-being. Instead, you use the verb mieć (to have) along with się (oneself). You are literally asking "How does sir have himself?". Ma is the form of "to have" used for he, she, it, and formal titles.
If this means "How are you", why are we using pan instead of the informal word for "you"?
Pan is the formal way to say "you" when speaking to a man, similar to "sir". When you use formal titles like pan or pani (for a woman), you must treat them grammatically like "he" or "she". That is why we use ma (he has) instead of the informal masz (you have).
Why is the word się placed before pan?
