Questions & Answers about Oba samoloty robią trudny manewr, podczas gdy wieża milczy.
Why do we use podczas gdy here instead of just podczas?
Podczas is a preposition meaning "during" and must be followed by a noun in the genitive case. Because we are connecting two full clauses with verbs (robią and milczy), we need the conjunction podczas gdy (while).
Could we use a instead of podczas gdy in this sentence?
Yes, but the nuance shifts slightly. Podczas gdy strongly stresses the simultaneous timing of the two events. Using a would place more focus on the contrast between the planes' action and the tower's silence, similar to "whereas" in English.
Why is the word for "both" oba here, rather than obaj or obie?
Samolot (airplane) is a masculine inanimate noun. In the plural, masculine inanimate nouns take the form oba. You would use obaj only for groups of men, and obie for feminine nouns.
What case is trudny manewr in, and why does it look like the dictionary form?
It is in the accusative case because it is the direct object of the verb robią. For masculine inanimate nouns like manewr, the accusative form is identical to the nominative form, which is why the adjective trudny doesn't change either.
Why is there a comma before podczas gdy when we might not use one before "while" in English?
Polish punctuation rules are very strict about clauses. You must always place a comma before a conjunction that introduces a new dependent clause, such as podczas gdy, że, or ponieważ.
