Question 1

Why do we use wobec here instead of do to mean "opposition to"?

Accepted Answer

Abstract nouns in Polish often have specific prepositions they require, which is called noun government. While English says "opposition to," the noun sprzeciw typically pairs with wobec followed by the genitive case, or przeciwko followed by the dative case. Translating English prepositions literally rarely works for abstract concepts.

Question 2

Could we say sprzeciw przeciwko przemocy instead?

Accepted Answer

Yes, absolutely. Both sprzeciw wobec (plus genitive) and sprzeciw przeciwko (plus dative) are correct and mean "opposition to/against." Using wobec can sound slightly more formal or objective, like a stance taken "in the face of" violence, while przeciwko highlights a direct clash against it.

Question 3

What case is przemocy in this sentence, and why?

Accepted Answer

It is in the genitive case because it directly follows the preposition wobec, which always forces the noun that comes after it into the genitive.

Question 4

The base word przemoc ends in a consonant, so why is its genitive form przemocy and not przemocu?

Accepted Answer

Przemoc (violence) is one of those tricky Polish nouns that end in a consonant but are actually feminine, not masculine. For feminine nouns ending in a consonant, like noc, krew, or rzecz, the genitive singular typically ends in -y or -i.

Question 5

Why does znany end in -y in this sentence?

Accepted Answer

The passive participle znany (known) functions as an adjective here, so it has to agree with the subject of the sentence: sprzeciw (opposition). Since sprzeciw is a masculine noun in the nominative case, znany takes the matching masculine nominative ending.
