Questions & Answers about Gdyby było słońce, panele wytwarzałyby więcej energii odnawialnej.
How could we express a similar idea using the lesson's target phrase, w zależności od?
You could say W zależności od słońca, panele wytwarzają więcej lub mniej energii (Depending on the sun, the panels produce more or less energy). Since w zależności od requires the genitive case, the nominative słońce changes to the genitive słońca.
The verb wytwarzać (to produce) usually takes the accusative case. Why is energia odnawialna in the genitive case (energii odnawialnej) here?
The case is overridden by the word więcej (more). In Polish, quantifiers like więcej, mniej (less), dużo (a lot), and mało (a little) always force the noun that follows them into the genitive case.
Why is the conditional verb wytwarzałyby rather than wytwarzaliby?
The ending depends on the gender of the subject. Panele (panels) is a non-masculine-personal noun. To form the conditional, we take the third-person plural past tense for this gender (wytwarzały) and add the particle -by. The -liby ending is strictly for masculine-personal subjects (groups containing at least one man).
Does the hypothetical Gdyby było refer to the past or the present here?
It refers to the present or the future, meaning 'If there were sun (right now)'. Even though Polish conditional sentences are built using past tense verb forms (like było), the particle gdyby creates a present hypothetical scenario. Polish usually relies entirely on context to distinguish between 'If there were' and 'If there had been'.
