Verbs taking 'za' (przepraszać za)

Verbs taking "za" for Reasons and Accountability

In Polish, when you apologize, assign blame, or give praise for a specific reason, you use the preposition za (for) followed by the Accusative case.

When dealing with corporate errors and public relations, you will frequently use the verb przepraszać (to apologize). Keep in mind how the Accusative case works for the objects of these sentences:

  • Masculine inanimate nouns and their adjectives (like ten incydent) remain identical to their dictionary form.
  • Plural non-masculine-personal nouns (like niedogodności) also remain unchanged.
The spokesperson apologizes for this incident.
Rzecznik przeprasza za ten incydent.
We apologize to you for the inconvenience in our hotels.
Przepraszamy państwa za niedogodności w naszych hotelach.

Taking Responsibility and Blaming

When managing a crisis, you will need to discuss who is at fault. Use the same za + Accusative structure with these expressions:

  • brać odpowiedzialność za (to take responsibility for)
  • winić za (to blame for)

Remember that feminine nouns like sytuacja will take the typical ending in the Accusative case (making tę sytuację).

The board of directors takes responsibility for this error.
Zarząd bierze odpowiedzialność za ten błąd.
We cannot blame the employee for this situation.
Nie możemy winić pracownika za tę sytuację.

Praising Good Actions

Just as you hold someone accountable for negative events, you use the exact same grammar to give credit for positive actions using the verb chwalić (to praise).

Clients praise the board of directors for the quick statement.
Klienci chwalą zarząd za szybki komunikat.

Complex Public Statements

You can combine these verbs with relative clauses and conjunctions to create a formal statement (komunikat) addressing the public or the press.

The spokesperson reads the statement in which he apologizes for the inconvenience.
Rzecznik czyta komunikat, w którym przeprasza za niedogodności.
Before we publish the statement, we must take responsibility for the fault.
Zanim opublikujemy komunikat, musimy wziąć odpowiedzialność za awarię.
