Before we look at how to make contingency plans, let's establish some essential vocabulary for plumbing emergencies, such as bursting pipes or leaking taps.

The pipe burst and flooded the kitchen.
Rura pękła i zalała kuchnię.
The tap is leaking, so I left a basin there.
Kran przecieka, więc zostawiłem tam miskę.

Using chyba że (Unless)

To express that a situation will happen "unless" a specific condition intervenes, use the conjunction chyba że.

As is standard with Polish conjunctions that introduce a new clause, always place a comma immediately before chyba że.

We must call a plumber, unless you fix it yourself.
Trzeba wezwać hydraulika, chyba że sam to naprawisz.
The tap will be leaking, unless you turn off the valve.
Kran będzie przeciekać, chyba że zakręcisz zawór.

This structure is especially useful for presenting the only way to avoid a negative outcome or setting strict conditions:

We cannot use the bathroom, unless you fix this valve.
Nie możemy używać łazienki, chyba że naprawisz ten zawór.
The water will flood the floor, unless you bring a large basin.
Woda zaleje podłogę, chyba że przyniesiesz dużą miskę.
