The identity pronoun (ten sam, ta sama)

The Exact Same Dimension

To express "the exact same," Polish pairs the demonstrative pronoun ten (this/that) with the adjective sam (same).

This phrase matches the gender of the noun it modifies: ten sam (masculine), ta sama (feminine), and to samo (neuter).

the exact same one [f: ta sama, n: to samo]
ten sam
This is the exact same dimension.
To jest ten sam wymiar.

Declining Both Parts

Because the phrase consists of two independent words, both change their endings to match the grammatical case of the noun.

For example, in the accusative case (direct objects), the feminine ta sama becomes tę samą.

We have the exact same version of events.
Mamy tę samą wersję wydarzeń.

In the locative case, the masculine ten sam becomes tym samym.

In the exact same dimension we have the exact same past.
W tym samym wymiarze mamy tę samą przeszłość.

Both words also match the case after prepositions. For example, przed (against, in warnings) takes the instrumental case, so ten sam becomes tym samym (which happens to look exactly like the locative).

The scientist warns us about the exact same paradox.
Naukowiec ostrzega nas przed tym samym paradoksem.

Plural Forms

For most plural nouns (like stars or dimensions), use the non-masculine-personal form te same.

If the portal worked, we would see the exact same stars.
Gdyby portal działał, widzielibyśmy te same gwiazdy.

When referring to a group that includes at least one man (like scientists), use the masculine personal form ci sami.

The exact same scientists are researching this paradox in another dimension.
Ci sami naukowcy badają ten paradoks w innym wymiarze.

More Paradoxes

The exact same jump created the paradox.
Ten sam skok stworzył paradoks.
If we went in there, the exact same loop would start.
Gdybyśmy tam weszli, zaczęłaby się ta sama pętla.
