The Conjunction "podczas gdy"
In English, when we want to highlight a stark contrast between two people, behaviors, or situations, we use words like "whereas" or "while." In Polish, the most common way to express this is with the conjunction podczas gdy.
Although it is made of two words (literally "during when"), it functions as a single phrase to connect two contrasting clauses. Always remember to place a comma before podczas gdy.
Let's see it in action comparing someone conceited (zarozumiały) to someone modest (skromny).

Contrasting Lifestyles and Perspectives
You can use podczas gdy to contrast entirely different habits, verbs, or noun identities. For example, comparing a workaholic (pracoholik) to someone who prefers resting, or an optimist (optymista) to a pessimist (pesymista).

This structure is a highly natural way to describe contradictory behaviors in different people. You will often see it paired with opposite adjectives, such as thrifty (oszczędny) versus wasteful (rozrzutny), or talkative (gadatliwy) versus reticent (małomówny).
