Telling Time: The Halves (wpół do)
In Polish, expressing half-hours requires a slight shift in perspective. Instead of saying "half past" the current hour, Polish speakers say "half to" the upcoming hour.
To do this, use the word wpół (half) and the preposition do (to), followed by the upcoming hour in the Genitive case. For example, 7:30 is thought of as "half to eight" (wpół do ósmej).

Minutes Past the Hour (po)
When telling time between the hour and the half-hour, use the preposition po (past/after).
The structure is: [minutes] + po + [the current hour in the Locative case]. For example, "ten past two" is dziesięć po drugiej.
A very common word used here is kwadrans (a quarter of an hour / 15 minutes).

Minutes To the Hour (za)
Once you pass the half-hour mark, you count the minutes remaining until the next hour using the preposition za.
This structure has two parts:
- za followed by the minutes in the Accusative case.
- The upcoming hour in its basic Nominative form.
So, "five to twelve" becomes za pięć dwunasta.

Schedules and Punctuality
Now that you know how to navigate exact minutes and halves, you can apply these phrases to travel itineraries, meetings, and strict schedules.
To say that an event happens at a half-hour, you still add the preposition o before the phrase (e.g., o wpół do czwartej).
