Contrasting Situations: tymczasem
To draw a strong contrast between two parallel but opposing situations, use tymczasem (meanwhile / whereas). It often highlights how two groups or choices diverge.
| We chose the highway ourselves, whereas they went through the forest. | Sami wybraliśmy autostradę, tymczasem oni pojechali przez las. |
| This road is a toll road, whereas the alternative is free. | Ta droga jest płatna, tymczasem alternatywa jest darmowa. |
It works perfectly when comparing expectations with reality:
| The navigation shows a shortcut here, whereas the road has no asphalt. | Nawigacja wskazuje tu skrót, tymczasem droga nie ma asfaltu. |
Compensating Factors: za to
To show that a negative point is balanced by a positive one (or vice versa), use za to (on the other hand / but in exchange).
While tymczasem compares two different situations or subjects, za to usually weighs two contrasting qualities of the same thing.
| The highway is a toll road, but on the other hand it is very fast. | Autostrada jest płatna, za to bardzo szybka. |
| This shortcut is dangerous, but on the other hand it is scenic. | Ten skrót jest niebezpieczny, za to malowniczy. |
| The alternative road has no asphalt, but on the other hand it is free. | Droga alternatywna nie ma asfaltu, za to jest darmowa. |
In Polish punctuation, a comma almost always precedes both tymczasem and za to when they connect two clauses or contrasting traits.
