Present tense agreement
Words that describe a portion of a group—like większość (majority), część (part, some), and połowa (half)—are grammatically singular feminine nouns in Polish.
When one of these words is the subject of a sentence, the verb must be in the third-person singular. This rule applies even when the partitive word is followed by a plural noun (like "the majority of respondents"), because the verb agrees with the quantity word itself, not the group it describes.
| The majority of the population is aging very fast. | Większość populacji starzeje się bardzo szybko. |
| Only half of the residents want to stay in this city. | Tylko połowa mieszkańców chce zostać w tym mieście. |
| Most of the respondents agree with this statement. | Większość ankietowanych zgadza się z tym twierdzeniem. |
Past tense agreement
Because większość, część, and połowa are feminine nouns, verbs in the past tense must take the third-person singular feminine ending (-ła).
It does not matter if the group being described consists of men, women, or inanimate objects—the grammatical subject remains the feminine singular quantity word.
