Oblique cases of small numbers (z dwoma, w trzech)

Instrumental case for "dwa"

When you play a board game with someone, use the preposition z (with) followed by the Instrumental case. For the number two (dwa), the masculine and neuter Instrumental form is dwoma.

the opponent
przeciwnik
We are playing a new game with two opponents.
Gramy w nową grę z dwoma przeciwnikami.

Group sizes with Locative

To say "the three of us" or "the four of us" are playing (for groups containing at least one male), Polish uses the preposition w (or we) followed by the Locative case: trzech (three) or czterech (four).

The players arrived, so the three of us are playing.
Gracze przyjechali, więc gramy we trzech.
This board is too small, the four of us are playing.
Ta plansza jest za mała, gramy w czterech.

Locative and Genitive (-ch)

For the numbers 2, 3, and 4, the Locative case (used for "in" or "on") and the Genitive case (used for "for" or "of") are identical. They always end in -ch:

  • 2: dwóch
  • 3: trzech
  • 4: czterech
My opponent cheated in two games.
Mój przeciwnik oszukiwał w dwóch grach.
I showed my strategy in four moves.
Pokazałem moją strategię w czterech ruchach.

You use these exact same forms for the Genitive case, such as after the preposition dla (for).

This is a good strategy for two new players.
To jest dobra strategia dla dwóch nowych graczy.

Instrumental of 3 and 4 (-ma)

Except for the feminine form of 2, the Instrumental forms of these small numbers all end in -ma:

  • 3: trzema
  • 4: czterema

Use these forms when doing an action with an instrument, like a pawn (pionek), or playing with opponents.

We are playing with four pawns on this board.
Gramy czterema pionkami na tej planszy.
My sister won against three players.
Moja siostra wygrała z trzema graczami.

The feminine "dwiema"

The number 2 is unique because it has a special Instrumental form specifically for feminine nouns: dwiema. You will use this when rolling two dice (kostka).

the dice
kostka
Now it's your turn, you are rolling two dice.
Teraz twoja tura, rzucasz dwiema kostkami.

Turns and moves

Board games are all about taking turns (tura) and making moves (ruch). Notice how the Instrumental case is used for the physical object you make a move with!

In the next turn I will make a move with my pawn.
W następnej turze zrobię ruch moim pionkiem.
I throw the dice and it is my last move!
Rzucam kostką i to mój ostatni ruch!
