Numbers 1 to 10

Counting from One to Four

Let's learn how to count in Polish, starting with the first four numbers:

  • jeden (one)
  • dwa (two)
  • trzy (three)
  • cztery (four)

To practice numbers, we can look at simple math equations. In Polish, you can use the word i (and) for "plus", and the linking word to to mean "is" or "equals".

is (linking copula)
to
One and one is two.
Jeden i jeden to dwa.
Two and two is four.
Dwa i dwa to cztery.

You can also use these numbers directly to count things:

He has one phone, and she has two.
On ma jeden telefon, a ona dwa.

Five to Ten

Next, let's count up to ten. Pay close attention to the spelling, as several of these numbers feature special Polish characters and end in the soft sound :

  • pięć (five)
  • sześć (six)
  • siedem (seven)
  • osiem (eight)
  • dziewięć (nine)
  • dziesięć (ten)

Let's practice with a few more simple equations:

Three and two is five.
Trzy i dwa to pięć.
Three and four is seven.
Trzy i cztery to siedem.
Five and five is ten.
Pięć i pięć to dziesięć.

And here is how these numbers look in everyday sentences:

They have six, and we have only two.
Oni mają sześć, a my tylko dwa.
We are buying nine, and they are buying ten.
My kupujemy dziewięć, a oni dziesięć.
