The -yni class
A small family of feminine nouns ends in -yni / -ini — mostly female counterparts of male roles: gospodyni (hostess, landlady), wychowawczyni (form teacher), sprzedawczyni (saleswoman), członkini (female member).
| case | form |
|---|---|
| Nominative | gospodyni |
| Genitive | gospodyni |
| Dative | gospodyni |
| Accusative | gospodynię |
| Instrumental | gospodynią |
| Locative | gospodyni |
| The landlady is not at home. | Nie ma gospodyni w domu. |
| I know the landlady of this house. | Znam gospodynię tego domu. |
Not like pani
Pani is the one exception in this shape: its Accusative is panią. Every other -yni noun takes -ynię: widzę panią, but widzę gospodynię.
Plural
gospodynie, gospodyń, gospodyniom… — the Genitive plural drops to bare -yń.
| Our hostesses cook well. | Nasze gospodynie dobrze gotują. |
