The Months of the Year
Unlike in English, the names of the months in Polish are not capitalized.
Saying "In a Month"
To state that an event happens in a specific month, use the preposition w (in) followed by the month in the locative case.
Most Polish months are masculine nouns that take the ending -u in the locative. Notice how many drop a "fleeting e" from their base form (e.g., styczeń becomes styczniu).
| Nominative (The Month) | Locative ("In...") |
|---|---|
| styczeń | w styczniu |
| marzec | w marcu |
| kwiecień | w kwietniu |
| maj | w maju |
| czerwiec | w czerwcu |
| lipiec | w lipcu |
| sierpień | w sierpniu |
| październik | w październiku |
| grudzień | w grudniu |
| This trip is in January, and the next one in March. | Ta wycieczka jest w styczniu, a następna w marcu. |
| We will do this new project in April and in June. | Zrobimy ten nowy projekt w kwietniu i w czerwcu. |
The Special Month "Luty"
Luty (February) is an adjective, so it takes the adjective locative ending -ym instead of a noun ending.
| In January and in February there is a very cold wind. | W styczniu i w lutym jest bardzo zimny wiatr. |
The Preposition "We"
Before words starting with w followed by another consonant, the preposition w changes to we for easier pronunciation. This applies to wrzesień (September), which becomes we wrześniu.
| My birthday is in July, and my brother celebrates in September. | Moje urodziny są w lipcu, a mój brat świętuje we wrześniu. |
The Exception "Listopad"
Listopad (November) takes the locative ending -e. This softens the final d into dzi, resulting in w listopadzie.
| In September and in November we rarely walk. | We wrześniu i w listopadzie rzadko spacerujemy. |
