The Mobile Conditional Particle
In Polish, the conditional mood uses particles like -bym, -byś, -by, -byśmy, and -byście. While you often see these attached to the end of a past tense verb, these particles are highly mobile!
Instead of staying glued to the verb, conditional particles can detach and attach to the first stressed word in the clause. The verb itself is left bare in its past tense form later in the sentence. One of the most common landing spots for a detached particle is a subject pronoun (like ja, my, on, or ona).
| I would never want to be invisible. | Ja bym nigdy nie chciał być niewidzialny. |
| We would gladly fly to a deserted island. | My byśmy chętnie polecieli na bezludną wyspę. |
Particles with Question Words
When asking a hypothetical question or daydreaming about unlikely scenarios, the particle naturally hops to the question word at the beginning of the sentence, such as co (what) or gdzie (where).
| What would you do as a billionaire? | Co byś zrobił jako miliarder? |
| Where would you teleport from work? | Gdzie byście się teleportowali z pracy? |
Particles with Adverbs and Indefinite Pronouns
You will also frequently see conditional particles attach to adverbs that start a sentence—such as chętnie (gladly) or zawsze (always)—as well as indefinite pronouns like nikt (no one).
| I would gladly turn back time. | Chętnie bym cofnął czas. |
| No one would want such a superpower. | Nikt by nie chciał takiej supermocy. |
