Instantaneous Verbs (-nąć)
In Polish, you can emphasize that an action happened exactly once in a sudden, brief burst by adding the suffix -nąć. These are known as semelfactive verbs. Because they describe a single, completed event, verbs ending in -nąć are always perfective.
Sudden noises and reflexes
You will frequently see this suffix used for bodily reflexes and sharp noises. For example, a continuous or repeated shout (krzyczeć) becomes a single, sudden yell (krzyknąć).
| Since he was sick, he wasn't able to shout. | Ponieważ był chory, nie był w stanie krzyknąć. |
| The boy sneezed five times. | Chłopiec kichnął pięć razy. |
Quick physical movements
The -nąć suffix is also used to describe single, rapid physical motions—like a single wink, a quick kick, or one sharp tap (where the repeated action pukać becomes the single instance puknąć).

| Someone kicked him in the leg. | Ktoś kopnął go w nogę. |
| Someone knocked on the window at midnight. | Ktoś stuknął w okno o północy. |
Brief glances and gestures
Finally, use these instantaneous verbs for fast, momentary actions, such as throwing a quick glance, waving a hand, or noticing a sudden flash of light.
