Indefinite pronouns of indifference (byle)

When you want to express that specifics or quality don't matter, Polish uses the word byle. Combining it with question words creates indefinite pronouns and adverbs of indifference, translating to "just any", "whoever", or "wherever".

You can pair byle with pronouns like kto (who), co (what), and jaki (what kind).

• byle kto – just anyone / whoever
• byle co – just anything / whatever
• byle jaki – just any (often implying mediocre or low quality)

Declining Words with "Byle"

Because byle acts as a prefix or particle, only the second part of the phrase changes case. The core pronouns (kto, co, jaki) decline exactly as they normally would. For example, byle co becomes byle czego in the genitive case, and byle kto becomes byle kim in the instrumental case.

To talk about standards, you might contrast these indifferent pronouns with the adjective wymagający (demanding).

Adverbs: Where, When, and How

You can also combine byle with adverbs to show a lack of preference or care about the circumstances.

• byle gdzie – just anywhere
• byle kiedy – just anytime
• byle jak – carelessly, sloppily, or "just anyhow"

Note that byle jak frequently carries a negative tone, indicating that a task was done with very low standards.

We can also express a lack of preference using the adjective obojętny (indifferent). It is commonly used in the phrase jest mi to obojętne (I don't care / it makes no difference to me).
