Hypothetical conditions with "gdyby"
To talk about unreal or hypothetical situations—like what you would do if you suddenly became a millionaire—Polish uses a two-part structure: a condition ("If...") and a result ("...I would").
For the condition, use gdyby (if). The personal endings attach directly to gdyby, followed by the verb in its 3rd-person past tense form.
For the result, use the conditional mood: a 3rd-person past tense verb with -by and the same personal ending attached.

Notice how the exact same personal endings (-m, -ś, -śmy, -ście) appear in both halves of the sentence, and the verbs always match the gender of the subject!

Reversing the clause order
Just like in English, the "if" clause doesn't have to come first. You can state the result first, and the grammar rules remain exactly the same.

| It would be a crazy idea if you suddenly gave away your entire fortune. | To byłby szalony pomysł, gdybyś nagle rozdał cały swój majątek. |
Negative conditions and "nawet gdyby"
To make either clause negative, simply place nie before the verb. You can also use nawet (even) right before gdyby to say "even if."
| Even though this villa is luxurious, I wouldn't buy it even if I had the money. | Mimo że ta willa jest luksusowa, nie kupiłbym jej, nawet gdybym miał pieniądze. |
