Expressing importance (zależeć na)

Expressing "To care about"

To say that something matters to someone, Polish uses the verb zależeć. In this context, it is impersonal and always takes the 3rd-person singular form: zależy.

The structure requires two specific cases:

  • The person who cares (the experiencer) takes the Dative case.
  • The thing they care about follows the preposition na and takes the Locative case.

[Dative experiencer] + zależy na + [Locative object]

The president cares about the economy.
Prezydentowi zależy na gospodarce.
The diplomat cares about dialogue.
Dyplomacie zależy na dialogu.

Pronouns and Plurals

This structure works the same way with pronouns and plural nouns. The experiencer simply takes the Dative (e.g., nam for "us", panu for "you, sir", or sojusznikom for "allies").

However, the allies care about the alliance.
Sojusznikom jednak zależy na sojuszu.
Since there is a conflict, we care about stability.
Ponieważ jest konflikt, zależy nam na stabilności.
Do you care about this treaty, sir?
Czy zależy panu na tym traktacie?

Negation and Emphasis

To say that someone does not care, place nie before zależy. To emphasize how much something matters, add an adverb like bardzo (very much).

The allies do not care about the new treaty.
Sojusznikom nie zależy na nowym traktacie.
The president cares a lot about stability and dialogue.
Prezydentowi bardzo zależy na stabilności i dialogu.
