Explaining what you mean (to znaczy, czyli, mieć na myśli)

Saying it another way

to znaczy — that is, I mean — restates or corrects what you just said. In writing it is abbreviated tzn.

I will come later, that is around eight.
Przyjdę później, to znaczy około ósmej.

czyli — that is, in other words, so — joins two names for the same thing, or draws the obvious conclusion. It is a conjunction, so it sits between the two parts.

We will meet on Saturday, that is the day after tomorrow.
Spotkamy się w sobotę, czyli pojutrze.

innymi słowy — in other words — the fuller, more formal phrase (Instrumental plural of inne słowa).

What do you mean?

mieć na myśli — to mean, to have in mind. The question Co masz na myśli? is how you ask someone to explain.

I mean your brother, not you.
Mam na myśli twojego brata, nie ciebie.

chodzi o to, że — the point is that, the thing is that — introduces the real issue. Without że, chodzi o + Accusative names it as a noun: chodzi o pieniądze (it is about money).

The thing is that I have no money.
Chodzi o to, że nie mam pieniędzy.
