Dealing with Indecision
When shopping for gifts, you might encounter someone who can't make up their mind. To describe someone as indecisive, use the adjective niezdecydowany, and for the act of hesitating, use the reflexive verb wahać się.
| You are very indecisive today. | Jesteś dzisiaj bardzo niezdecydowany. |
| Why do you always hesitate? | Dlaczego zawsze się wahasz? |
Forcing a Choice: "Albo... albo..."
To force a decision between mutually exclusive options, Polish uses the correlative conjunction albo... albo... (either... or...).
A crucial punctuation rule: always place a comma immediately before the second albo.
You can use this structure to connect two nouns or phrases:
| I would buy either this necklace or this bracelet. | Kupiłbym albo ten naszyjnik, albo tę bransoletkę. |
| We will buy either this elegant perfume or nothing. | Kupimy albo te eleganckie perfumy, albo nic. |
You can also use albo... albo... to link two complete clauses:
| Either you buy this elegant perfume, or you have no taste. | Albo kupisz te eleganckie perfumy, albo nie masz gustu. |
| Either you take a darker shade, or you do not buy a bracelet. | Albo bierzesz ciemniejszy odcień, albo nie kupujesz bransoletki. |
Making the Final Decision
Words like ostatecznie (ultimately) help push an indecisive friend toward a final resolution:
| You are indecisive, but ultimately you must choose either perfume or a necklace. | Jesteś niezdecydowany, ale ostatecznie musisz wybrać albo perfumy, albo naszyjnik. |
